Xi Jinping Arrives in Pyongyang for a State Visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)

On June 20, 2019, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang by a special plane for a state visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

At around 12:00 at noon local time, Xi Jinping's special plane arrived at the Pyongyang Sunan International Airport. Bathed in sunshine shortly after rain, Pyongyang was brimming with luxuriant landscape, blooming flowers and a friendly atmosphere. The national flags of China and the DPRK fluttered in the wind at the airport. Banners bearing welcome slogans "Warmly Welcome General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China" and "Long Live the Unbreakable Friendship and Great Unity Forged with Blood by the People of the DPRK and China" were seen hanging high. Nearly 10,000 people lined up, waving flowers and chanting cheerful slogans to welcome the distinguished Chinese guest. Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission Kim Jong Un of the DPRK and his wife Ri Sol Ju greeted Xi Jinping at the airport.

Amid thunderous cheers of the DPRK people, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan walked out of the cabin, and were greeted beside the ramp by Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju. Xi Jinping walked down the ramp and warmly shook hands with and extended greetings to Kim Jong Un. The DPRK children presented flowers to Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan. President Xi Jinping also shook hands respectively with senior officials of the DPRK side who greeted him.

The DPRK side held a grand welcome ceremony at the airport. Amid a 21-gun salute, the military band played the national anthems of China and the DPRK. Accompanied by Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping inspected the honor guard of the three services of the Korean People's Army and watched a march-past.

Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and other delegation members arrived by the same plane.

H.E. Li Jinjun, Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, also greeted Xi Jinping at the airport.

Leaders of the WPK and the DPRK including Pak Pong Ju, Ri Yong Ho, Ri Man Gon, Ri Su Yong, Choe Hwi, Kim Yong Chol, Kim Su Gil, Ri Yong Gil, No Kwang Chol, Ri Ryong Nam and Kim Yo Jong attend the welcome ceremony at the airport.

Following the welcome ceremony, Xi Jinping went to the Kumsusan Guesthouse by car being escorted by 21 motorcycles. Hundreds of thousands of people lined up along the way, waving national flags of China and the DPRK and flowers and chanting "Long Live the China-DPRK Friendship" and other slogans to show their welcome.

After arriving at the crossing of the Ryomyong Street, Xi Jinping changed to an open-top vehicle and rode with Kim Jong Un to the square of the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun. Throngs of people gathered on both sides of the street and stood at high slopes and by windows of residential buildings, cheering and saluting the Chinese distinguished guest. There were warm smiles everywhere and endless friendly cheers. Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un frequently waved to the welcoming crowds.

The square of the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun bathed in bright sunshine is extraordinarily majestic. The large portraits of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are hanged high side by side. The large flower beds are spread in the middle of the wide square, with a fragrant scent and greenery. The welcome crowd in festive costumes was arranged in a square array. When Xi Jinping arrived, tens of thousands of colored balloons flew into the sky. At the square, Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan, in the company of Kim Jong Un and Ri Sol Ju, received the salute of the WPK and government officials as well as representatives of Pyongyang citizens, and shook hands with them. Xi Jinping was the first foreign leader to be honored with such a salute at the square of the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, which fully demonstrated the hospitality and respect of the host. Leaders of the WPK and the DPRK including Choe Ryong Hae, Kim Jae Ryong, Pak Kwang Ho, Kim Pyong Hae, O Su Yong, Park Tae Sung, Thae Hyong Chol, Choe Pu Il, Jeong Kyeong Taek, Kim Tok Hun, Ri Ju O, Tong Jong Ho and Kim Nung O attended the salute activity.

Afterwards, Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan went to the Kumsusan Guesthouse by car for stay.
