Wang Yi Holds Talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad

On July 17, 2021 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad in Damascus.

Wang Yi expressed, since China and Syria established diplomatic ties 65 years ago, the friendship between the two countries has withstood the test of the changing international landscape, and it will grow stronger and more robust as time goes by. The two countries always understand and support each other on issues involving each other's core interests and major concerns. On major issues of principle concerning national sovereignty and independence, China stands firmly by the Syrian people and international justice. China is willing to work with Syria to carry forward traditional friendship, strengthen friendly cooperation, maintain common interests, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and safeguard international fairness and justice, and legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.

Wang Yi said, China stands ready to, on the basis of equality and mutual respect, strengthen inter-party exchanges, and share experience on state governance. China appreciates Syrian understanding of and support for China in safeguarding its core interests. China firmly supports Syria in exploring a development path suited to its national conditions, and supports its vital role in maintaining regional peace and stability. China will continue to provide Syria with vaccines and other medical supplies to help the country defeat the virus at an early date. Syria is a partner for cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China is willing to work with Syria to explore effective ways to advance mutually beneficial cooperation, and strengthen cooperation in fields such as agriculture, economy and trade, offering help within its capacity to Syrian reconstruction and livelihood improvement. China supports the two countries in strengthening counter-terrorism cooperation, and it stands ready to help Syria lift the capacity for combating terrorism, maintains respective national security, and makes its due contribution to safeguarding international security.

Mekdad said, China is Syria's important and close friend. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, Syria and China have continuously strengthened relations and solidarity. Syria sincerely appreciates China's assistance during its most difficult period and China's support for its maintaining national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Taking the 65th anniversary of the diplomatic ties as an opportunity, Syria hopes to seek greater development of the bilateral ties. Syria expresses warm congratulations on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), condemns all acts of smearing and attacking China, and opposes interfering in China's internal affairs. He believes that the Chinese people will deliver greater achievements under the leadership of the CPC. Syria will always stand by China at any case. Syria appreciates China's help in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and the Chinese aid for Syria's reconstruction. Syria is willing to sign a deal with China on jointly building the BRI, boost bilateral cooperation in fields such as economy, trade, agriculture, infrastructure, and connectivity, and jointly combat terrorism. After the talks, the two sides attended the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperation documents.
