Wang Yi: The Chinese Side Reaches Wide-ranging Consensus with Four European Foreign Ministers
2021-06-01 14:16

On May 31, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks and jointly met the press with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto in Guiyang.

Wang Yi said, the foreign ministers of Poland, Serbia, Ireland and Hungary have recently visited China in succession, marking the first face-to-face meetings between the Chinese side and the foreign ministers of European countries this year, and also a strategic communication between China and Europe in the face of the new situation and new challenges. I conducted in-depth and candid exchanges with the four foreign ministers and reached wide-ranging consensus.

- We all agree that strengthening dialogue and cooperation in the post-pandemic era should become a common choice for China and European countries. The two sides have highly complementary development advantages, a foundation for cooperation based on a long history of working together, and the same pressing need to resume growth. We should thus stand in solidarity and support each other, give play to complementary advantages, as well as on the basis of reining in the virus as early as possible, deepen the alignment of national development strategies, promote the integration of industrial and supply chains, and enable practical cooperation to maintain the development momentum.

- We all agree that we should pay attention to and calmly reflect on the current difficulties in China-Europe relations. The right approach should be to launch constructive dialogue, enhance mutual understanding, remove distrust and misgivings, continuously broaden the common ground, focus on mutually beneficial cooperation and drive healthy and stable development of China-Europe relations on the basis of respecting basic facts.

- We all agree that China and Europe, as two important forces in the process of multi-polarization, have always had the most important consensus in defending multilateralism. In the past few years, both China and Europe have risen against the practices of unilateralism, defended multilateralism with concrete actions, and prevented the world from heading toward confrontation and division. In response to more complex and diverse global challenges in the post-pandemic era, China and Europe, as comprehensive strategic partners, should all the more bear in mind the overall interests, take a long-term perspective, step up coordination and cooperation, jointly uphold and practice true multilateralism, effectively improve global governance, and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Wang Yi stressed, all the four countries are important partners of China in Europe, and their relations with China have withstood the test of changes in the international landscape. At this critical moment, our in-depth communication in Guiyang is of great practical significance. China is willing to stay in exchanges and dialogue with Europe, boost understanding and trust, and jointly promote our cooperation goals to better serve the respective development of China and Europe and the well-being of the Chinese and European people.
