Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue's Remarks on the Handling of Detainees in Guantanamo
2004-11-02

Q: The US State Department said on October 28th that the United States will look for a third country to admit the terrorists of East Turkistan detained in Guantanamo. What's the comment of the Chinese side?

A: Terrorism, as a common enemy of the mankind, poses a grave threat to the peace and security of the international community. Recently, Abdullah Mehsud, a terrorist released from the Guantanamo base, masterminded the terrorist act of kidnapping two Chinese engineers in Pakistan, coming under unanimous condemnation of the international community. We hope that the US side will properly handle the issue involving terrorist suspects of Chinese nationality in Guantanamo in a prudent and responsible way.

The terrorist force of East Turkistan is a part of the international terrorist forces, posing a grave threat to people's lives and property in the international community, including in China and the US. The US side should proceed from the overall interest of international anti-terrorism cooperation and China-US bilateral relations, act cautiously in accordance with the norms of international law, and refrain from any action that may undermine international anti-terrorism cooperation.
